CORA MCCANN LIDERBACH
We spilled from American ships / rushed to a bridge facing the glacier / to film a coastal brown bear splashing in a brook / wrestling paws round a red Sockeye salmon / rumbling to green privacy / to tear it open, claws & jaws / I wondered what would happen if she paused midstream / to sniff our own warm flesh, the salt tang of human blood / these old legs wouldn’t carry me far / even from a bear summer-heavy with salmon / I felt somehow safe amid the throng / believing the fittest & fleetest would pull the rest of us to safety / not abandon us to hunger’s cruel indifference
