LIVIA MENEGHIN

Self-portrait, with Carlo as pool

In Porticciolo, some of us choose chlorine & olive oil
over seawall & salt. They go.
I stay.
A cormorant beats its wings on the Mediterranean,
then disappears,
diving below a blue loved so well
by midday sun. I search for him to reappear,
but I lose him.             Or, he loses me.          Or, he is lost.
I’ve admitted before that I cannot say I’m happy
when I’m not.
There is a blooming that comes
with gelato, yes & yet—
even when I manage not to spill cioccolato fondente
on my shirt, I worry about wanting to live but not knowing how.
I can’t see the men playing water polo, can’t hear
their artificial splashes over waves roaring
into boulders below my feet.
& also because the pool is no longer there.
